Later that night, Aya couldn’t contain her excitement and she didn’t even try to. From when she and her driver picked me up at my house and all throughout the entire ride, Aya hadn’t stopped babbling about how “fun” and “awesome” the party was going to be. At that moment, I honestly didn’t know what to expect since it was my first time ever to attend a party. I could only nod and smile at Aya’s words.

Soon, we found ourselves in the home of Kari Valdez, the host of the party. As Aya led me by the arm into the house, I instantly felt a mix of bewilderment. The turnout was quite remarkable; I hadn’t seen so many of my batch mates gathered outside school before. And later on, I saw that the party featured not only sophomores, but also people from the other year levels, even seniors.

I found myself lost in the rush of the things happening around me and if Aya hadn’t taken the liberty to guide me through the whole scene, I would have just stood there by the front door with my mouth wide open. As we made our way through the enormous living room, I struggled to take in everything that I was witnessing. Music playing loudly. Food of all sorts and glasses, both filled and empty, on the floor. Smoke. The smell of cigarettes, alcohol, and vomit. And the people. Wow. I couldn’t believe that they were the same people I saw every day at school. Aya took me from one room to another, and it didn’t take me long to figure out that she was looking for someone.

“Hey, Aya. If you want to hang out with someone else, okay lang. You don’t have to stick with me all night.”

“Alam ko. I’m just looking for a place to leave you in. A dark, musty corner sounds perfect, doesn’t it?”

“Some best friend you are!”

“Just kidding! Girl, tulungan mo na nga ako! Keep your eyes open for a world-class chef!”

“Shh! Watch what you’re saying, Aya. That’s top secret information.” And at long last, the world-class chef finally appeared before us.

Aya laughed and gave him a playful punch on the arm. “Well, sorry ka na lang! The article about you will be on the upcoming issue of Pluma, which I expect will be out by the end of the month.”

“I knew I should never have agreed on an interview!” Marc shook his head in mock disappointment. “Do you know how important secrets are to an unbelievably good-looking guy like me? I’ve got to have a mysterious side too. Problema ‘to, Ms. Garcia.”

“If cooking is your idea of ‘mysterious,’ then yes, Mr. Ramirez. Problema nga ‘to!”

Aya and Marc began laughing heartily and I could only watch them in awe. When they had enough of laughing, they eventually remembered that I was there.

“Hey, Sia!” Marc said, smiling. “Glad to see you here.”

I merely shrugged at him. Aya flashed me a look that said, “Hey, you’re supposed to be talking,” but I just shrugged at her, too.
